Child Abuse Prevention Month

Kendra Taylor, Case Manager

Although life in April might have looked a lot different this year, some things remained the same- flowers started to bloom, an occasional snow shower occurred, and it was Child Abuse Prevention Month!

Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month is dedicated to raising awareness of child abuse and bringing individuals and communities together to prevent abuse and neglect. Child abuse and neglect is within all communities around the country and often goes unnoticed and unreported, even in our own community. CAP Month not only aims to bring attention to these cases, but to bring attention to what individuals and communities can do to prevent more cases from occurring.

Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA) is at the forefront of this movement and is always sharing ways to get involved. This year, PCAA led a social media movement to wear blue (the color associated with CAP) on April 3rd and participants tagged their photos with #wearblueday2020 and #greatchildhoods. Other ways PCAA recommends getting involved is through mentoring a child in your community, contacting local elected officials to advocate for children and families, and participating in the Pinwheels for Change Campaign. The Pinwheels for Change Campaign was established in 2008 and placed the pinwheel as the national symbol for child abuse prevention. Throughout the month of April pinwheels are placed within communities to raise awareness and represent the fun, whimsical, and great childhood that all children deserve to experience. In years past, the Pocahontas County Family Resource Network has partnered with other local organizations to hold a CAP Month celebration at the Pocahontas County Courthouse, as well as, combined CAP Month with the annual Easter Egg Hunt. This year’s events were cancelled due to COVID-19 regulations and restrictions, however, the PCFRN continued to spread awareness to families. During the monthly ABC Class and Baby Pantry, participating families received an informational CAP Month handout, pinwheel coloring sheets with a sticker for children, and a pinwheel to place in their yards. Information was also handed out to individuals and families from the community at the monthly Harvest House Food Pantry. We were able to provide CAP Month information to around 300 families so far this month! Even though this year’s awareness was provided on a smaller scale and CAP Month is almost over, this does not mean that awareness for child abuse and neglect goes silent for a year. PCFRN works hard every day to provide resources and meet the needs of children and families within our community. We believe that that all children deserve to be educated, nurtured, and protected and we all have the responsibility to ensure that happens for our children. Just because CAP Month occurs only one month per year does not mean that you cannot continue to create a great childhood for children in your life and community every day. We are all in this together and we can all make a difference. For more information on the Pocahontas County Family Resource Network, please visit www.pcfamilyresourcenetwork.org.
